Gilbert & Sullivan’s Swashbuckling Musical, The Pirates of Penzance
The San Pedro Theatre Club (San Pedro, CA)

Gilbert and Sullivan’s beloved comic musical, The Pirates of Penzance, tells the story of Frederic, a boy mistakenly apprenticed to a softhearted band of pirates (his hard-of-hearing nurse was told to take him to a ship’s pilot). When his apprenticeship is finally over, he leaves the pirate ship and promptly falls in love with a Major-General’s daughter. Just as he starts planning for a law-abiding future, the pirates return to inform him that since his birthday falls on Leap Day, he still has another 63 years of pirate apprenticeship left. After a series of zany mishaps, the lovable pirates make their peace with the police and Frederic gets his girl. Along the way it’s a rollercoaster ride of swashbuckling action and merry music, featuring many of Gilbert and Sullivan’s wittiest and most engaging tunes, including the immortal “I Am the Very Model of a Modern Major-General.”
