Irvin Mayfield and the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra

New Orleans Jazz Orchestra has served as a beacon for the troubled city with a rich cultural spirit. Irvin Mayfield, the city’s official Cultural Ambassador, leads this swinging 18-piece ensemble in a Big Easy tribute, carrying out the traditions of New Orleans jazz, blues, swing and spirituals. Mayfield, a trumpet prodigy who rose to prominence as Wynton Marsalis’ protégé, takes the orchestra through big band arrangements in an evening so rich in Southern flavor that you can almost taste the gumbo and jambalaya. This special Valley Performing Arts Center performance includes a Classroom in the Courtyard pre-concert lecture, “New Orleans Jazz: Then and Now,” led by CSUN music professor Gary Fukushima.
