Dorothy Chandler Pavilion (Los Angeles, CA)
Boris Eifman, known as the bad boy of Russian ballet, brings his St. Petersburg-based contemporary dance ensemble back to California, for a performance of 2011’s Rodin. One of Eifman’s signature dance-theater pieces, along with Onegin and Don Quixote, this full-length work is based on the tragic true love story of the famed French sculptor Auguste Rodin, best known for The Thinker, and his mistress/muse Camille Claudel. Pieces by Ravel, Saint-Saëns and Massenet provide the score for this intense romance that pulses with artistic jealousy. The Los Angeles Times calls Eifman’s creations “theatrical, visionary works that delve into characters’ lives in the most exciting, probing, titillating, and wondrous ways,” and his company continues to combine the discipline of traditional Russian ballet with a contemporary dramatic flair in their dynamic, modern productions.
