"An Evening of Clifford Odets"

A successor to Eugene O’Neill and an inspiration to American playwrights from Arthur Miller to David Mamet and beyond, Clifford Odets’ influential and socially relevant dramas offer rousing, hilarious and devastating glimpses into a bygone America. This evening honoring Odets’ most famous plays features selections from Golden Boy, Awake & Sing and Paradise Lost, along with Waiting for Lefty in its entirety. First produced in 1935, Waiting for Lefty is a blistering drama that offers a series of Depression-era vignettes based around an impending taxi strike. As the cabbies wait for their union leader, they share their individual stories, from a desperate couple who can’t feed their children, to a doctor facing anti-Semitism and more. Meanwhile, a company spy is revealed, and the workers’ shared frustrations lead them to take action.
