Romance Turns to Madness in Passion-Filled Opera Thérèse Raquin
Warner Grand Theatre (San Pedro, CA)

The powerful passions of Thérèse Raquin herself drive this tragic romance, adapted from the Emile Zola novel into a lavishly-scored opera by the award-winning Tobias Picker (The Fantastic Mr. Fox, Emmeline). Trapped in a marriage to a sickly husband, a Parisian woman finds herself inexorably drawn to a former lover, which leads them both down a dangerous path to a decision that’s doomed to haunt them forever. It’s a gritty portrayal of adultery, madness and ghostly revenge with a cinematic score as passionate as La Traviata and as chilling as Salome. L.A.’s Warner Grand Theatre hosts this Long Beach Opera production of a work that’s “infused with moments of searing reflection and luxurious sensuality” (Opera Now).
