St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church Nolte Hall (Los Angeles, CA)

"Goyescas"

When Enrique Granados composed the opera Goyescas, he probably had no idea it would lead to his death. The Spanish composer was inspired by the paintings of Francisco Goya to create a work about doomed lovers, and the premiere in New York was so successful that President Woodrow Wilson invited Granados to play piano at the White House. The delay in Granados’ return trip to Spain placed him on steamer in the English Channel that crossed paths with a German U-boat, and the composer and his wife went down with the ship. In addition to performing Granados’ moving one-hour opera at St. Andrews Lutheran Church in Los Angeles, the Independent Opera Company will offer up other selections from operas about doomed lovers, including Carmen and Romeo & Juliet.
