Alex Theatre (Glendale, CA)
Though it’s no longer possible to hear a castrated male sing any of the roles in Mozart’s La Clemenza di Tito, you should still be able to enjoy its overture as performed by the Glendale Youth Orchestra. The GYO will be led by a Julliard-trained conductor and joined by Sherry Tang, a 16-year-old pianist who’s already played Carnegie Hall twice. Though the opera’s respected nowadays, the Holy Roman Emperor’s wife dismissed it as “a German mess” after its premiere, while in 1945, Alfred Einstein pooh-poohed it “the product of haste and fatigue.” The GYO will also play works by Beethoven and Grieg at a Glendale landmark, the beautiful Alex Theatre.
