"The Guilty Mother"

Pierre Beaumarchais was an 18th-century French watchmaker, horticulturalist, arms dealer, inventor and spy — though these days he’s almost exclusively remembered as the comic playwright who introduced the world to the unscrupulous barber Figaro in The Barber of Seville and The Marriage of Figaro. But while this pair of commedia dell’arte masterworks have withstood the test of time, today Beaumarchais’ third and final chapter to the Figaro saga — The Guilty Mother — is seldom performed and woefully overlooked. In partnership with LA Opera, LA Theatre Works is giving you a rare chance to experience this 1792 comedy in a “radio theater-style” production starring TV, film and theater veteran Gregory Harrison (Broadway’s Follies). Set two decades after The Marriage of Figaro, The Guilty Mother finds the Count and Countess Almaviva relocated to Paris, both hiding past sins. When a villain uncovers the family’s secrets, the Almavivas seem certain to lose their reputations — and their fortunes.
