James Armstrong Theater at Torrance Cultural Arts Center (Torrance, CA)

With a wailing violin, clanging tambourines and oodles of saxophone and accordion improvisation, Yale Strom & Hot Pstromi is an Appalachian folk band on klezmer steroids. Bandleader and founder Yale Strom pioneered a revival of music from Central and Eastern Europe (where he lived among the Jewish and Roma communities), fusing with his Hot Pstromi band traditional klezmer, gypsy, khasidic, world beat and Balkan music with the improvisational breaks of American jazz. Pepper in a dusky-timbred singer and songs that sway from intimate and intense to wildly exuberant, and you’ve got a lively ensemble based in San Diego yet rich with sounds from across the world.
