Gluck's "Orfeo ed Euridice"

According to Greek myth, when the beautiful nymph Euridice died on her wedding day, her husband Orfeo resolved to go and search for her in the netherworld. In Hades, the beauty of Orfeo’s song wins the compassion of the Furies and he is granted safe passage to return home with Eurydice. Just as they are nearing the surface, however, Orfeo breaks the one rule imposed on him before the rescue and his love is taken from him once more. This first and most famous of Gluck’s reform operas has been an audience favorite for over 200 years, loved for its powerful drama. This production at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Monrovia is performed by Opera Animata.
