North American premiere of award-winning Gujarati playwright, Madhu Rye’s celebrated classic!

Mississauga, February 20, 2015 – SAWITRI Theatre Group is proud to present a four-act play in the Gujarati language of India – Koi Pan Ek Phoolnu Naam Bolo To? (Tell me the Name of any Flower) at the Sampradaya Theatre, Mississauga, on Thursday March 19, Friday March 20, 2015 at 8 pm and on Saturday March 21, 2015 at 6 pm.

A psychological thriller, Koi Pan Ek Phoolnu Naam Bolo To? is a play within a play. It is about an ambitious amateur theatre group that stages a play that ends in a murder at the end of act one. Who? How? Why? Acts two, three and four explore the various layers of relationships and motives within this group of five actors and their playwright to answer these questions. The play premiered in 1969 in Ahmedabad, India. It was directed by an icon of the arts, Mrinalini Sarabhai, and produced by Darpana Academy. For its Canadian premiere, Koi Pan Ek Phoolnu Naam Bolo To? is directed by Naimesh Nanavaty and Jasmine Sawant. This is their first full-length play as directors, and it’s the first full length Gujarati play to be produced and presented by SAWITRI Theatre Group (Madhu Rye’s Ashwatthama in 2010 was one-act play).

Founded in January 2003, SAWITRI Theatre Group is the only South Asian, incorporated not-for-profit theatre organization in Mississauga. Presenting original, challenging and exciting works of established as well as emerging artists, SAWITRI Theatre Group highlights issues prevalent in the South Asian community. A three-time Martys nominee, SAWITRI Theatre Group is known to take risks, bringing unique theatre experiences to its audiences, producing plays in some of India’s many languages, including English. Madhu Rye, is best known for his famous Gujarati play Kumarni Agashi, Santu Rangeeli, the Gujarati adaptation of Shaw’s Pygmalion, the TV series Mr. Yogi in 1989 and the Bollywood film What’s Your Raashee? In 2007 starring Priyanka Chopra – both based on his novel Kimball Ravenswood. Born in Gujarat in 1942, he studied in Calcutta, then in Honolulu (stagecraft and direction). He returned to India briefly and in 1974 moved to the US for his MA in education and creative writing. Rye settled in the US; he started a Gujarati weekly in 1978 and also edited Gujarat Times published from New York. He resides in New Jersey and is editor of a short story magazine, Mamta since 2011.
