Carrie Hamilton Theatre at The Pasadena Playhouse (Pasadena, CA)
The lives of a 21st-century Phoenix real-estate agent, her pool contractor husband, and 17th-century Mexican baroque poet-nun Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz somehow become entwined in this dreamlike one-act drama at Pasadena Playhouse’s Carrie Hamilton Theatre. A trailblazing proto-feminist author and nun who’s revered in Spanish-speaking countries, Sor Juana was a self-taught poet, playwright, scientist and philosopher, who’s under pressure in Properties of Silence to give up her research. The play incorporates original soundscapes and video inspired by her landmark poem, “Primero Sueño (First Dream),” and each performance is followed by a salon featuring poetry readings and panel discussions.
