"Rigoletto"

If you can’t make it to San Francisco to see the famed San Francisco Opera perform live, this cinema series is the next best thing, brining acclaimed performances to Torrance courtesy of a high-definition, multi-camera filming. Cynical, womanizing leaders may be commonplace in entertainment today — just think of Frank Underwood in House of Cards — but when Giuseppe Verdi first wrote Rigoletto, the story of an immoral duke, the censors practically chased the composer out of town. Now you can see why this controversial opera captivated audiences back in Verdi’s day (once he was finally able to show it) and continues to be one of the most popular operas of all time. Boasting two of opera’s all-time favorite arias (“Questa o quella” and “La donna è mobile”), Rigoletto tells the tragic story of the curse laid upon the hunchbacked jester, his daughter Gilda and the lecherous Duke he serves. The opera will be sung in Italian with English subtitles.
