Alex Theatre (Glendale, CA)
Featuring Lana Turner and John Garfield as a pair of murderous lovers, director Tay Garnett’s 1946 noir classic The Postman Always Rings Twice has often been imitated, but its dark and passionate romance is not easily duplicated. Detailing the sultry affair between a drifter and the shiftless waitress working the diner outside of Los Angeles at which he finds work, the film’s unforgettable tension builds as what once seemed a perfect crime of passion begins to unravel. Based on the novel by the great James M. Cain, the title famously refers to Cain’s own postman, who would ring twice when delivering rejection notices from publishers. This program at the Alex Theatre will be introduced by Alan K. Rode, director of the Film Noir Foundation and producer of the annual Arthur Lyons Film Noir Festival in Palm Springs.
