When you imagine a night out to see ballet, it probably isn’t difficult to picture yourself admiring the grace and beauty of stylized movement, or to imagine yourself swooning to stirring strains of music — but how often does the idea of live ballet have you envisioning yourself laughing out loud at the satisfying comedy of the story? Well, if that rare combination of qualities sounds appealing, you’re in luck, because South Bay Ballet has chosen to close the season with Coppélia, one of classical ballet’s greatest comedies. This charming, lighthearted performance introduces happy lovers Swanhilda and Franz, whose happiness is shaken by the arrival of an enigmatic beauty whose flirtations with Franz enrage Swanhilda. But what they don’t yet realize is that this “girl” is, in actuality, an incredibly lifelike doll created in the workshop of the mysterious Dr. Coppelius. Misunderstandings ensue in this delightful classical ballet — which is filled to the brim with comedic mayhem — at the James Armstrong Theater at Torrance Cultural Arts Center.
