"Gracias a la Vida: The Rebel Spirit of Chile's Legendary Voice"

A quartet of top Chilean musical artists — Andean folk heroes Illapu, pop vocalist Colombina Parra, singer-songerwriter and fashion designer Francisca Valenzuela and hip hop star Ana Tijoux — celebrate the life and music of Chile’s much beloved singer-songwriter, Violeta Parra. Parra was a pioneer of the Chilean New Song folk and progressive political movement in the ’50s and ’60s and is best known for her legendary anthem, Gracias a la Vida (Thanks to Life), covered over the years by artists like Joan Baez and Michael Buble. The group Illapu has been transforming Andean folklore and rhythms into its own sophisticated style of nueva cancion for decades, and Colombina Parra is not only a niece of Violeta’s, but she’s also a popular singer-songwriter in her own right, famed for her appearances on MTV Latin America and for her well-received pop discs. Born in San Francisco and raised in a Chilean household, Francisca Valenzuela has been called “Latin America’s most glamorous artist” (Esquire Magazine, Spain) and “one of the newest hit-makers” (The New York Times), Ana Tijoux is the groundbreaking MC of the Chilean hip hop outfit Makiza, and even landed a song on the U.S. TV series Breaking Bad. Don’t miss this special tribute at Los Angeles’s Walt Disney Concert hall.
