The Montalbán (Hollywood, CA)
How can you play “cops and robbers” when you run out of thieves (not to mention subversives, revolutionaries and dissenters)? This is the dilemma — tag it #dictatorproblems — facing the the ruthlessly efficient police force of the hypothetical country in Slawomir Mrozek’s brilliantly scathing satire El Ultimo Preso, known as The Police in English. After years of thorough fear-mongering and brutality, the last political prisoner alive is ready to recant, leaving the police with zero “bad guys” to go after. Their existential crisis inspires a plan to manufacture dissent, with results that are both hilarious and harrowing. Now Alejandro Bichir directs a Spanish language version of this classic wicked political comedy at The Montalbán.
