"Words by Ira Gershwin"

Meet the man behind so many of the lyrics that you love. “I Got Rhythm,” “Embraceable You,” “‘S Wonderful,” “Someone to Watch Over Me” — the list of classic songs written by Ira Gershwin goes on and on. He may not have received quite as much recognition as his brother George, who became a household name for his work as a composer and a pianist, but Ira’s talent as a lyricist was equally as eminent. Joseph Vass, whose award-winning The Soul of Gershwin packed houses a few years back, now presents Words by Ira Gershwin, which takes you on a musical journey from Ira Gershwin’s modest start writing comic tunes to hitting it big on the stage and screen. This Los Angeles premiere of the musical play at The Colony Theatre brings to life Ira’s quiet genius through the songs he created with composers Harold Arlen, Vernon Duke, Jerome Kern, Kurt Weill and, of course, his brother George.
