Navillus Gallery is pleased to present INFINITY POOL, an exhibition featuring the work of Contemporary Canadian Abstract Painter Julie Gladstone.

Julie Gladstone is a Neo-Pop, abstract landscape painter based in Toronto. Her work contributes to a long discourse throughout art history exploring themes of humans and nature. She examines the contemporary meaning of what is considered “wild” or “natural” and explores questions around environmental destruction, climate change, and what it means to be human. By employing elements of humor and exaggeration, she draws attention to banal aspects of the landscape that our eyes often ignore.

Gladstone’s new work considers the iconic Canadian tradition of landscape painting as a spiritual escape from the urban environment.Romantic notions of The Sublime meet the repetition of Pop Art and the decorative patterning of Art Nouveau and Modern Abstraction. The result is a postmodern reflection on the role of beauty in art and the landscape which, as a culture, we simultaneously idealize and destroy.

28 May – 27 June 2015. Navillus Gallery. Free.
