Theatre Raymond Kabbaz, Le Lycee Francais de Los Angeles (Los Angeles, CA)

Ibrahim Maalouf

Ibrahim Maalouf is one of the most daring trumpeters since Miles Davis, blending the quarter-tones of the Arab trumpet with the best in the jazz tradition. Despite growing up in one of the most artistically distinguished families in the French-speaking world (his father, Nassim Maalouf, is also accomplished trumpeter, while his uncle, Amin Maalouf, won the Prix Goncourt), Maalouf had no time distinguishing himself as a unique talent, not only within his own family, but throughout the contemporary jazz scene. At age 30, his album Diagnostic created a sensation in France. The album sold more than 25,000 copies by the end of June 2012, making Maalouf the French jazz artist with the highest sales in the entire country for over two years. Now, Ibrahim Maalouf and his powerhouse band return to Theatre Raymond Kabbaz to pay tribute to Arabic diva Oum Kalthoum on the 40th anniversary of her passing.
