REDCAT: Roy and Edna Disney/CalArts Theater (Los Angeles, CA)

In the height of the Arab Spring, Westerners glommed onto A Gay Girl in Damascus, a blog purportedly written from the heart of Syria. But then the blogger was reportedly kidnapped by government forces, and suddenly people were wondering if she ever existed at all. Sophie Deraspe’s gripping documentary tracks the online flirtation between a Montreal journalist named Sandra and a Syrian woman named Amina, pulling the viewer right into the middle of international intrigue. The film screens as part of Outfest 2015 at REDCAT in Los Angeles.
