Cinderella Waltz: Twisted Take on Fairy Tale
Morgan-Wixson Theatre (Santa Monica, CA)

Cinderella Waltz transports the beloved fairy tale’s titular heroine to a rural hovel on the outskirts of “Cinderville,” where she must contend with her demented stepmother, her lecherous father, her stepsisters Goneril and Regan, and even a homicidal village idiot. It’s a twisted take that borrows elements from the older — and significantly more disturbing — Grimm Brothers version of Cinderella to investigate the unseemly origins of a story familiar to most for its gentle, uplifting Disney remake. The results, as produced by Santa Monica’s Morgan-Wixson Theatre, blend grotesque farce and romantic fantasy into something decidedly more dark, daring and hilarious.
