Lineage Performing Arts Center (Pasadena, CA)
Shakespeare was never squeamish or stingy when it came to violence: He merrily lopped off character’s limbs, gouged out eyes, forced poison down throats (or into ears). In Titus Andronicus alone, he snuffed out 14 characters with murderous glee, and then threw in graphic torture and cannibalism for good measure. After all, this was guy who competed with live bear-baiting for audiences. Now the Ensemble Shakespeare Theater showcases his bloodiest and most brilliantly extreme passages in Shakespeare’s Night Of Terror. Featuring disturbing excerpts (from Titus, of course, but also Richard III, Macbeth and more), SNOT stars a hellish narrator who guides the audience through a macabre-yet-comic cast of characters and stories that thrill and amaze. Brian Elerding directs this hilarious and harrow meditation on the nature of fear at Lineage Performing Arts Center.
