Aero Theatre (Santa Monica, CA)
Actor Cliff Curtis has captivated international audiences in such films as Blow, Whale Rider and Training Day, as well as TV’s Trauma and AMC’s new Fear the Walking Dead. Through his production company, Whenua Films, Curtis works to promote filmmaking in his native New Zealand. Get an advance peak at his latest star vehicle The Dark Horse, coming to the big screen at Santa Monica’s Aero Theatre. This inspiring true story follows Genesis “Gen” Potini (played by Curtis, in the performance of his career), a speed-chess champion with bipolar disorder. His search for stability brings him to the Eastern Knights after-school chess club, mentoring several at-risk teens, including his young nephew, Mana. But the boy’s gang-member father has plans for his son that don’t include chess. Variety calls The Dark Horse “The most deserving cinematic export to emerge from New Zealand in years — and that’s taking into consideration the recent Hobbit trilogy.” Be among the first Stateside movie buffs to see the film and catch an in-person discussion with Cliff as he hosts this double bill, which includes the 1994 dysfunctional family drama Once Were Warriors.
