Outbound for Pluto is the rare confluence between life partners Susan Schelle and Mark Gomes, culminating in this two-person exhibition of new, mixed media artwork. Though acclaimed for their joint public installations (Bloor/Spadina Art Park, “lineage” for Jackson Square/Hamilton City Centre, “jetstream” at Pearson International Airport, ”untitled” for Prince Arthur Condominiums), Schelle and Gomes rarely have shown together. Over time, an obvious connection and through line in both of their artistic practices has emerged in the form of an ongoing conversation that continues with the latest developments from each artist’s oeuvre. While Outbound for Pluto presents two independent series of work, Schelle and Gomes collaborated on the curation of this exhibition, placing conscious attention to the architecture of the space. The result is a hyper-reverberation between the individual works that intentionally highlights, engages, and alters the gallery’s architecture. Additionally, the individual pieces in this show emphasize the physicality and materiality of the object as well as the experience of viewing them within exhibition space. Outbound for Pluto is an extension of the Schelle’s and Gomes’ voyage into the imagination that continues “out there” beyond the definitions of aesthetic discourse.
