ABOUT TAG

Tangled Art Gallery (TAG), a unique new exhibition space dedicated to showcasing disability arts and advancing accessible curatorial practices, opens May 4th in Toronto’s iconic arts building – 401 Richmond.

Audiences can expect to engage with art that reshapes understandings of disability, encounter disability artists who invigorate the art world, and interact with inclusive technologies that reimagine how we experience art. Constructed Identities, a major show of new work by Canadian artist Persimmon Blackbridge, will be the first exhibit in TAG.

FEATURED EXHIBITION: CONSTRUCTED IDENTITIES

By Persimmon Blackbridge

Exhibition runs May 4, 2016 – July 6, 2016

In Constructed Identities, Blackbridge uses mixed media wood-carving with found objects to question how disability is framed as a fracturing of ordinary life rather than a normal, expected part of it. Her exploration of the figure begins in disability, but necessarily complicates itself as our embodied identities intersect and overlap.

Constructed Identities will be an inclusive artistic experience with all work hung at an accessible level, featuring an audio description track of each piece as well as tactile art – created for the audience to engage with through touch. This event is in a barrier-free location. There is an accessible washroom on the 4th floor of 401 Richmond. ASL interpreters and attendant care will be present at all events. Please help us in making this a scent-free environment.

Opening and Exhibition reception: May 4, 7:00-9:00pm

Remarks at 7:30. Light refreshments will be served.
