The Toronto Reel Asian International Film Festival (Reel Asian), presented by National Bank, continues its ongoing support of the South Asian community with BOLLYWOOD IN THE BLUFFS, an afternoon-to-evening outdoor community fair and film screenings event. Held in partnership with Scarborough Arts, the free family-friendly event will take place on the grounds of the Bluffs Gallery and adjoining Harrison Estates Park at 1859 Kingston Road on Saturday, May 28, 2016.

The Bluffs Gallery will be open to the public, and Scarborough Arts will be on hand to explain their programmes and activities. We thank the Ontario Trillium Foundation and the office of Councillor Gary Crawford for their support of this event.

Screenings during the day will include the animated feature film, SONS OF RAM, and Tamil title O KADHAL KANMANI (English title: Oh Love, Apple of My Eye). Written and directed by Kushal Ruia based on well-known characters from Hindu mythology, SONS OF RAM tells the story of the Luv & Kush, twin sons of Surayvanshi Ram of Ayodhya, the greatest warrior king that ever lived. The twins grow up in exile, unaware of their father’s legacy, but raised by their mother Sita with strong wisdom, compassion, and combat skills. But they still have their inner demons to conquer before they can achieve their destiny to reunite their family. Presented in Hindi & English with English subtitles.

The time between each repeat screenings of SONS OF RAM will be accompanied with children’s activities such as colouring exercises, storytelling time, and a tilak painting session. Children’s activities are hosted and facilitated by Ankita Sharma of Markham Village Library.

The latest work from internationally celebrated director Mani Ratnam, O KADHAL KANMANI is a love story that takes an honest look at contemporary relationships. It’s still fairly uncommon to find couples living together before marriage in modern-day urban India. But that doesn’t matter to video game developer Aadhi (Dulquer Salmaan) and aspiring architect Tara (Nithya Menen), who are instantly attracted to each other after meeting in Mumbai. Neither believes in marriage and both have plans to leave India for their careers. So, unbeknownst to their families, they decide to turn a blind eye to society and live together for as long as they’re both in town, making the most of their short-lived romance and believing it will be easy to part when the time comes. With music by Academy® Award winner A.R. Rahman and cinematography by the renowned P.C. Sreeram, O KADHAL KANMANI is a sweet rebellion of romance. Presented in Tamil with English subtitles.

The event ends with an outdoor evening screening of the popular Bollywood classic, KUCH KUCH HOTA HAI (English title: Something Happens). Better known simply as KKHH, the film is one of Indian cinema’s most beloved romantic, musical family films of all time, starring legends of the industry Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, Salman Khan and Rani Mukherjee. Innocent tomboy Anjali is secretly in love with her best friend, college heartthrob, Rahul. They’re inseparable until Rahul falls for the beautiful new campus addition, Tina. Heartbroken and unable to express how she truly feels, Anjali quietly exits Rahul and Tina’s lives, leaving them to get married. Not long after beginning their happy marriage, however, Tina sadly dies giving birth to their daughter. Almost a decade later, inspired by letters Tina left behind, their young daughter tries to fulfill her mother’s last wish of reuniting Rahul and Anjali. KUCH KUCH HOTA HAI was the first Bollywood film to enter the UK cinema top ten. Free chai provided courtesy of Alokozay. Presented in Hindi with English subtitles.

KUCH KUCH HOTA HAI will be preceded by performances from Red Wine Entertainment, an acclaimed musical duo who performs classical Indian and fusion music on the sarod and tabla. Red Wine Entertainment has over 20 years experience and professional training, and has performed at the Toronto International Film Festival.

All movie screenings are free and open to the public.
