High speed chase in Winnipeg results in arrests

On June 12, 2010 at approximately 9:00 p.m., members of the Winnipeg Police Service Stolen Auto Unit observed a suspected stolen vehicle in the area of Gilbert Avenue and Tyndall Avenue. As a result, officers continued to follow the suspect vehicle and subsequently requested additional officers to assist them.

Uniform members initiated a traffic stop at which time the occupants of the suspect vehicle fled the area at a high rate of speed having no regard for public safety. Officers pursued the suspect vehicle in the area of Ellice Avenue and Spruce Street.

While officers were attempting to safely stop the vehicle, the suspect driver veered into the path of a police cruiser causing the suspect vehicle to lose control and strike a hydro pole in the area of Ellice Avenue and Garfield Street.

One of the suspects was apprehended at the scene while the other attempted to flee from officers on foot. He was located and arrested a short distance away.

No one was injured as a result of the event.

As the investigation progressed, officers located a canister of bear spray within the stolen vehicle.

Two 15 year old males have been arrested. One of them has been charged with the following: Theft under $5000.00, Possession of a Weapon for Dangerous Purpose, Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle, Flight from Police and Drive without a Licence. He was detained in custody.

The second male is facing the following offences: Theft under $5000.00 and Possession of a Weapon for Dangerous Purpose. He was released on a Promise to Appear.
