Manitoba premier Greg Selinger ducked reporters’ questions regarding how he plans to run for the NDP leadership while still running the province after the Remembrance Day Service at the RBC Convention Centre. Premier Selinger alleged that “we’ll do our announcements at a separate time, at a separate place,” adding that “with respect to any other matters, this is a government event and I am here as the premier of the province and anything relating to party matters will be at another time.”

Quite noticeably, Mr. Selinger has not answered any media questions publicly since shuffling his cabinet on Nov. 3. Addressing reporters, Mr. Selinger stated that “I have been making statements and you have seen my press statements,” adding that “when I am in a government role, I strictly will stay with that.” According to a statement issued earlier on Monday, Selinger pointed out that “it’s time to put this question of leadership into a democratic arena where I’m ready, willing and able to show why I was elected leader of the party by our members and elected premier by Manitoba voters.” The statement said that Selinger wants to have the leadership vote during the NDP convention at the beginning of March.

However, it’s still pretty unclear who is planning to run against the premier. According to predictions of several political scientists, Andrew Swan is most likely to be a contender. Swan was one of Selinger’s cabinet members to have openly questioned his leadership in October, along with Theresa Oswald, Stan Struthers, Jennifer Howard and Erin Selby. All five resigned from cabinet but have remained NDP MLAs.
