Several voters were turned back today from Barnet Council after the officials claimed their names were missing from polling during the election for a mayor and the London Assembly today. The council has apologized for the inconvenience and confirmed that new registers are now in place at all polling stations so those denied a vote should come back.
According to a spokesperson from Barnet Council, it was difficult to estimate the number of voters affected but she said the council was reviewing why the wrong registers were issued. It was explained that “all the updated electoral registers are now in place and people can vote as normal,” adding that “if [voters] don’t have their polling cards, that’s fine.” The staff told reporters that a “printing error” was to blame.
One of the voters turned back from the polling station, David Fraser, explained that he was told to get back to the polling station later in the day. He explained that “I’m now not going to be able to vote. I don’t have time to go back.” Whereas another voter in Golders Green revealed that he was turned away from a station in Oakfields Road, Temple Fortune, from his ‘democratic right.’ He stated that “I got up early so that I could get to the polling station at 8am before work,” “but when I got there, they said my name is not on the list and that there was a problem.” He mentioned that “I am so disappointed. I like voting as it is the right thing to do and it is a democratic right.”
