Opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) boldly predicts mid-term elections claiming that the current government will fail to complete its tenure. The statement came a day after Prime Minister Manmohan Singh showed confidence and declared that his government will complete full five years.
BJP spokesman Balbir Punj said: “This government has lost the mandate to rule. Its numbers in the Lok Sabha are suspect. Predict mid-term polls.”
Balbir further highlighted the political instability in the country, alleging that a number of parties are assessing the situation.
Samajwadi Party (SP) supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav said: “I have come to know about a confidential report which says that elections will be held in November. You people start preparing for them.”
Despite all the alarming statements, Congress keeps assuring that the government will complete full-term in office.
Congress spokesperson Sandeep Dikshit said: “The government will complete full tenure… Mulayam Singhji may have his own view. Like the PM said, the elections will happen in time.”
However, PM Manmohan Singh has admitted there is the possibility that Samajawadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav will try to shake the Congress-led UPA government.
“Obviously coalitions face issues. Sometimes, they give the impression that these arrangements are not very stable and I cannot deny that those possibilities exist. But I am confident our government will complete five years and that the next Lok Sabha elections will take place on schedule,” Dr Singh said on board Air India One while returning from the BRICS summit in Durban.
