The Regent Theater (Los Angeles, CA)
Tinariwen, one of Northern Africa’s most celebrated musical groups, brings their haunting Saharan blues to downtown L.A.’s Regent Theater. Founded in the ’80s in the lands surrounding modern-day Mali, Tinariwen are Tuareg, descended from nomadic desert tribes, with hypnotic music that blends old and modern Arabic pop influences with Western rock ‘n’ roll sounds. In the last decade, they’ve become worldwide music stars, playing some of Europe and America’s biggest festivals and gaining fans like Carlos Santana, Robert Plant, Bono and Thom Yorke. Most of their albums were recorded in dusty tents under the stars of their native land, but new record Emmaar was made in a house in Joshua Tree, on the fringes of California’s high desert. See this fascinating global group when they trade sand for city to play this L.A. concert.
