Abu Azmi on his shocking remarks

Just when one thought that things for women will get better with each passing day, reports came out about women being molested in Bengaluru during New Year’s eve celebrations. According to the reports, 1500 police officials were posted for security but women were harrassed by some drunk miscreants.

Today, in a shocking statement, Samajwadi party MLA Abu Asim Azmi blamed short dresses of women for the incident of mass molestation in Bengaluru on the New Year’s Eve. In an offensive sexist remark, Azmi talked about the incident claiming that it was bound to happen as they were wearing short dresses. This came after Karnataka Home Minister G. Parameshwara blamed women for dressing provocatively and inviting harassment while reacting to the Bengaluru case.

Abu Azmi also compared women with petrol saying, “You have to keep petrol away from fire. And if there is sugar, ants will come automatically to it.” He further added, “In today’s world, the more a woman is nude, the more she is considered modern and educated. Such things are on rise in the country. Western culture is a black spot on country’s culture and it should be stopped at the earliest. And we need to focus on our famous Indian culture.”

Asking women to follow Indian culture, Azmi said, “Women must step out with family.” Azmi said, “It won’t be right for my sister or daughter to go out at night without male members of the family. Partying late night in half attire, blindly following western culture, has never been our culture. Ladies hailing from well-to-do families, be it from Maharashtra, Gujarat, Rajasthan or UP, they come out in decent attire and mostly with their family members. I am saying what happened is very unfortunate. Undoubtedly, making security arrangement to thwart any eventuality is police’s job. But, as far as Bengaluru molestation is concerned, women and their guardians must also take precautions and think that security starts at home. Our women must think about their own security themselves,” Azmi told the media while addressing the unfortunate incident.

This remark did not sit well the Bollywood celebrities who came out and slammed Abu Azmi for making such insensitive remarks. Varun Dhawan and Farhan Akhtar were the first ones to speak against the politician. Taapsee, who has recently done the film Pink which spoke of molestation and victim blaming, also called out the politician for making such remarks. Richa Chadha too wasn’t amused by Abu Azmi’s misogynistic comments and went on slamming him for making remarks and shaming women.

Argggh how this angers me.Sir punish the criminals not the victims. Women can wear what they want it’s their choice. https://t.co/HSpRjlRq8A

Please don’t wear a shirt. Wear a kurta-pajama or dhoti. Let’s stop westernisation. https://t.co/LflTVC5GJD
