May 14, 1992 – This was the day when Saif Ali Khan’s debut film Parampara had released. Though Aashik Awara [1993] was the film with which he made his solo debut, it was Parampara, a multi-starrer featuring Aamir Khan, Vinod Khanna and Sunil Dutt amongst others that introduced Saif Ali Khan to the audiences.

February 24, 2017 – As Saif Ali Khan gets ready to celebrate his Silver Jubilee in Bollywood, it is Sajid Nadiadwala and Vishal Bhardwaj’s Rangoon that would be bracing up for the celebrations.

“It is all uncanny and a coincidence that he wouldn’t mind,” says a film historian, “Saif Ali Khan has been around for long and has done close to 50 films as a lead actor. Now to go back more than 50 years in time for a period drama like Rangoon is pretty much a fitting event in itself. I wonder if even Saif is conscious of this remarkable milestone in his professional career.”

It wasn’t originally planned this way though. Earlier slated to release late last year, Rangoon was pushed to its current release timeline since it requires extensive post production work.

“Not that Saif would mind it though,” comments an observer, “Rangoon could well be celebrated as his Silver Jubilee year film. It is special too for many reasons, one of it being the fact that this is also Saif’s first true period film. As an actor, it is indeed a huge high when you are the chosen one to step into the era gone by. You need a mature actor to pull off the look and wardrobe of the 40s and Saif is just the right fit for that.”

Incidentally, Saif has two more films lined up for release in 2017 – Kaalakaandi and Chef.

“Yes, and Kaalakandi releases on May 26, which is again a good coincidence to have, considering the fact that Saif Ali Khan would be starting his 26th year as an actor,” the historian adds, “Later, Chef arrives on July 14.”

Meanwhile, one waits to see how do Saif’s producer Sajid Nadiadwala and director Vishal Bhardwaj plan to make this major milestone all the more special for Saif Ali Khan. While an extensive release plan has already been put together for the film’s arrival, added noise around Rangoon being Saif’s ‘Silver Jubilee’ film could be no less than an event either.
