“I am not such a fool to give back my national awards” – Prakash Raj

Veteran actor Prakash Raj has been making news since yesterday when it emerged that he claimed that he’s going to give back his National Awards. As per reports, he said so to protest against the murder of Gauri Lankesh. The senior journalist was assassinated outside her house by unknown persons on September 2. She was a good friend of Prakash Raj and both knew each other since 30 years.

After the reports started doing the rounds, Prakash Raj put a video on Twitter in which he made it clear that he’s not going to return his National Awards. He however also highlighted that there were certain right wing-inclined people who were celebrating Gauri Lankesh’s killing since she mainly wrote against them. He also added that Prime Minister Narendra Modi follows many of such abusive people on Twitter and that according to him is quite scary.

To quote Prakash Raj, “Well I can just laugh as I see the scrolling on the news channels that ‘Prakash Raj has decided to give back his national awards’. I am not such a fool to give back my national awards. It has been given to me for my body of work, which I am very proud of. But coming to the main point, I was on a stage where I was addressing a group of youngsters. When there was discussion about the recent killings of Gauri Lankesh, Kalburgi etc., my reaction was that we don’t know who has killed them. There’s the police and SIT who are doing the investigations. But we can see who is celebrating it. I am pained and taken aback by these celebrations of an inhuman killing. Since I vented out my pain towards those who were celebrating it, I’ve been trolled, abused etc. Fine, it’s all in the game. I take it. But at the same time if the Prime Minister of this country is following such people (on Twitter) and has not taken a stand on them, I as a citizen am disturbed, afraid of this silence. I am not talking
about the person from some other party. I don’t belong to any political party. I am a citizen of this country. And as a citizen, I am not talking against any party. I am talking to my Prime Minister and I say that your silence is chilling. I am hurt by it and I have a right to say this. It’s as simple as that.”

Prakash Raj will be seen in Golmaal Again, the grand Diwali release co-starring Ajay Devgn, Parineeti Chopra, Tabu, Arshad Warsi, Tusshar Kapoor, Kunal Kemmu and Shreyas Talpade. It is directed by Rohit Shetty.

What’s said…n what’s not said. For all out there .. thank you pic.twitter.com/zIT7rnkFxb
