Saif Ali Khan fondly remembers Shashi Kapoor and his drinking sessions with the deceased actor

Shashi Kapoor left for heavenly abode on December 4 and as expected, fans and members of Bollywood fraternity mourned heavily about the loss. One such celebrity who was really dejected by the demise is Saif Ali Khan. He has opened up about his association with Shashi Kapoor that not many knew before.

Saif Ali Khan said that the first thing that struck him about the actor was his great looks. He said he was disturbed as a nine year old when he saw Amitabh Bachchan attacking him with a knife in a scene in Manmohan Desai’s Suhaag. He also narrated a funny incident that took place when his mother, actress Sharmila Tagore, was shooting with Paap Aur Punya. Saif was three and Shashi Kapoor was the actor in this film. He accompanied his mother on the shoot and saw the villain whipping Shashi Kapoor. Saif couldn’t understand why no one was willing to help him. Saif hence decided to take charge. He went and bit the villain’s butt! As expected, everyone on the sets got aghast. Shashi Kapoor explained to little Saif that everything he saw was make-believe and that it was just a film’s shoot.

Saif Ali Khan also said that he has fond memories of the actor visiting his residence at Carmichael Road in South Mumbai. Both used to converse about King Lear among other things. Later on, Saif Ali Khan enjoyed having a drink with him and talking to him. He observed that he never bonded so well with any other co-star of Sharmila Tagore. Interestingly, Saif’s father Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi used to have very few friends from the industry and he used to enjoy Shashi’s company a lot. Shashi Kapoor too loved interacting with the later cricketer. Once, Shashi Kapoor borrowed a bandhgala from Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi and it fit him like a glove. Saif Ali Khan was also impressed when he out of the blue called and informed him that he was returning the loan of a few lakh rupees that he borrowed from his mother.

Today, Saif Ali Khan is closer to Shashi Kapoor’s elder son Kunal. He meets him regularily and also his brother Karan. Kunal in fact says that Saif Ali Khan was a bit of a terror in his childhood.

On the film front, Saif Ali Khan is gearing up for the release of Kaalakaandi, co-starring Akshay Oberoi, Shenaz Treasusy, Neil Bhoopalam, Vijay Raaz and Shobita Dhulipala. It is directed by Akshat Verma and releases on January 12, 2018.
