The last week of April seems to be the time when Bollywood gets a major inferiority complex. Last year, Baahubali 2 – The Conclusion had released at this time and it took a historic opening of Rs 41 crore. It was a Telugu film, dubbed in Hindi, and yet, took the whole country by storm like never before. The other biggies of the year like Golmaal Again and Tiger Zinda Hai failed to have such a blockbuster opening and Baahubali 2 emerged as the highest opening day grosser of 2017.

Tremendous buzz for Avengers: Infinity War; will it break Baaghi 2’s opening day record?

And this year, yet another non-Bollywood film is all set to set the box office on fire. Avengers: Infinity War releases on Friday April 27 and the hype for the film is tremendous. It is the nineteenth film of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The franchise has been highly successful world over, including India. What’s interesting is that not just The Avengers but even Doctor Strange, Spider-Man and the fun characters of Guardians Of The Galaxy have joined in. As a result, it will be a treat to watch nearly a dozen superheroes together fighting a common enemy.

The films that work elsewhere in the world might not have the same kind of excitement in India. For instance, the Star Wars series never does huge business in our country as the fan following is extremely restricted. But when it comes to Avengers and its characters, it’s a different story. The first part of The Avengers, released in 2012, was one of the biggest Hollywood grossers in India then. But the super-success of Iron Man 3 made people sit up and take notice. It was not exactly a film of a group of superheroes, like The Avengers. Yet, the excitement for this Marvel character was such that it managed to cross the Rs 50 crore mark with its lifetime collections. The next Avengers film, called Avengers: Age Of Ultron, arrived in 2015 and surpassed the business of both these films, netting more than Rs. 75 crore.

Thereafter, almost all the Marvel films did fair business, even in the worst case scenario. The entry of Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2017 with Spider-Man: Homecoming (he was briefly shown in Captain America: Civil War in 2016 though) was a huge boost. Spider-Man is a very popular character in India and there would be an excitement to see him teaming up with The Avengers.

The fan following for Marvel is tremendous, but most of these are the English-speaking, multiplex audiences. However, over the years, The Avengers have become a popular franchise even among the masses, who’ll watch the film in dubbed versions. The success of the dubbed version is very important for this film to do blockbuster business. Previous films of The Avengers and other Hollywood biggies like The Jungle Book, Fast & Furious etc became huge in India thanks to the dubbed versions.

Thankfully, for Avengers: Infinity War, the masses will be lapping up the film big time. Moreover, there has been no significant big film since Baaghi 2 that released almost a month back. The advance booking commenced on Sunday and the response was humongous. At the IMAX screens, there were reports of shows getting sold out within a couple of hours! Even the advance booking of the Hindi version has been very encouraging. This is despite the fact that the ticket rates have been inflated and that it’s a non-Holiday Friday.

So now the big question – how much will Avengers: Infinity War earn on the first day? Looking at the buzz and ticket sales, it seems that the glorious opening-day record of Baaghi 2 of Rs. 25.10 crore is all set to be broken! Avengers: Infinity War is all set to open better than Baaghi 2 and if all goes well, then it can even cross the coveted Rs. 30 crore mark on its very first day! This would be a first for a Hollywood film! Rs. 100 crore is a given but how much it can do in the lifetime depends on the content. But the excitement of watching so many superheroes together is so high that most of the viewers will still go for it even if response is not favourable.
