Mumbai: Bollywood’s famed and much popular director-producer, who is called the biggie of the trade, Karan Johar said that he auditioned more than 400 girls before signing Alia Bhatt, the daughter of Mahesh Bhatt in his upcoming film, ‘Student of the Year’. Johar, 40, is returning to direction after the hiatus of two years. His last directed venture was Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol starrer My Name is Khan.

Student of the Year has been well in news and been creating quite a good noise in the media and entertainment circles. It stars all the new lively faces – the teen age faces. The film’s look is quite young and fresh which will certainly appeal to the masses. Since Karan is behind the direction and production with his big banner Dharma Productions, the movie seems to be a sure hit altogether.

Johar says that Alia was not his first choice for the role rather he screen tested more than 400 girls for the role. He was almost disappointed when he did not find the right girl. At that time Niranjan Iyengar told him that Mahesh Bhatt’s younger daughter Alia Bhatt was also on way to make her debut in cinema and she would be the perfect choice. Karan then met her and took her screen test. Ali aptly fitted to the role, Johar was looking for. The only problem was her being a bit overweight. He asked her to lose some kilos off her body. Alia was then assigned a physical trainer and a dietician. Soon she emerged with a svelte figure.

Karan says he was sure for the best from Varun Dhawan and Siddharth Malhotra as they were his assistants on the movie My Name is Khan. But he is looking forward to the best of Alia on screen once the film is out.
