Times readers Get FREE $30 to spend on Amazon, Walmart… Ever since the release of the 'Pinga' song in Bajirao Mastani, a lot of Maharashtrians residing in Pune vented out their anger over the portrayal of Kashibai in the film stating that the film has distorted the facts. Now after the release of the film, according to many of these, Bajirao Mastani based on the real life Peshwa Bajirao, does not even come close to reality. This has rubbed them and certain activists the wrong way which led to a few protests in Pune.
Pune, which was once a part of Bajirao's kingdom, has a close connection with his history and a lot of them residing there believe that Sanjay Leela Bhansali has twisted the story of the film for making it a commercial Bollywood film. While some decided to express it in a non-violent manner on social media, some others including the political parties resorted to angry protests in the city. In fact, some of the theatres, multiplexes in Pune had to cancel certain shows fearing the repercussions. The Peshwas and the others who were a part of these protests argued that Sanjay Leela Bhansali has insulted Bajirao and the song where Priyanka and Deepika are dancing to the tunes of 'Pinga' is offensive. They added that a woman of Kashibai's stature (a queen) wouldn't be dancing in such a way and that it is insulting royalty.
On the other hand, a source close to the production house denies these rumours saying, "Yes, there were a few issues in certain specific areas in Pune but now everything is fine and the film is running well in the city."
Directed and produced by Sanjay Leela Bhansali along with Eros International, Bajirao Mastani has Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone playing titular roles. The film is released on December 18.
