'1 Ruthless Crime Lord. 20 Elite Cops. 30 Floors of Chaos'
This is what one reads on the promotional material of Indonesian film The Raid: Redemption [2011], a martial arts action film that had made waves internationally half a decade back. Boasting of some never seen before action, the film had its USP in all the thrills and chills that unfolded as the cops went on a killing spree from one floor to another of a building infested by gangsters.
This action unfolded for almost the entire running length of the 100 minute odd film.
2016 – Tiger Shroff's Baaghi is set to hit the screens. It is a love story of two rebels – Tiger Shroff and Shraddha Kapoor. This is what the promotional material suggests as well. There have been three songs unveiled so far – a romantic track 'Sab Tera', a dance number 'Let's Talk About Love' and a joyful melody 'Cham Cham'.
As far as memory goes, there was none of such interspersions in The Raid: Redemption.
Yet…. the Indian production house which has picked up the rights for remaking the Indonesian film believes that Baaghi has lifted from The Raid: Redemption.
Really? Just because there is 'action that moves from one floor to another'?
So every film that has its protagonist riding atop a horse through a desert is a Lawrence of Arabia? Every film where a hero steps into a heroine's house and wins over her parents is a Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge? Every heist story has its bearings in The Sting?
It is surprising when such kind of controversies break out. As the adage goes, there is a 'zameen aasmaan ka antar' between what those 20 cops did in The Raid: Redemption versus what apna hero Tiger Shroff is expected to do 'apne dam part', and woh bhi single handedly, in Baaghi. The promo is pretty much laying the cards open and guess what, Tiger is not even wearing the uniform like his Indonesian counterparts.
Oh yes, the promo does hint about 'action through floors' and that dazzling body count. Are the makers of Ab Tak Chappan listening? Perhaps they have a case to talk about! After all, 'aaj ka ladka' Tiger seems to be on track to steal all the thunder from right under the nose of mighty Nana Patekar, as he promises to more than double the count of 'chappan'.
Ab tak sensing similarities? Par kab tak?
