During the promotions, Mahima Chaudhry confirmed that her film was inspired by Sheena Bora murder case and she was playing the role Sheena's mother aka Indrani Mukerjea. When she was offered the role, she found it different. Mahima wanted to know all the details and prep for around three months but hardly got any time. Instead, the director wanted to kickstart the time in the two-three days when they offered her the role as the case was just unfolding.

Dark Chocolate is Mahima Choudhary's first Bengali film and she finished shooting for it in just a month. Speaking about the case, director Agnidev Chatterjee said that he has tried to say what went down during the case in this film. He knew most of the people involved in the case and it was hard for him to believe that a mother killed her daughter.

For those who are unaware of this case, Indrani Mukerjea, her ex-husband Sanjeev Khanna and her former driver Shyamwar Rai were arrested for the murder of her daughter Sheena Bora in August 2015.

Directed by Agnidev Chatterjee and produced by Pradip Churiwal, Dark Chocolate also stars Riya Sen, Mumtaz Sorcar and Rajesh Sharma.
