Members of the Toronto Police Service Human Trafficking Enforcement Team have made an arrest in connection to a human trafficking investigation.
It is alleged that:
– between August 7, 2016, and November 30, 2016, a man coerced, exploited and forced multiple victims into the sex trade
– he took all the money earned by the victims
– he controlled the victims by forcing them to ingest various illicit narcotics and by threatening their families
– he forced the victims to “brand” themselves with his full name on their body
On August 16, 2016, Mathew Maxwell, 27, of Toronto, was arrested and charged with 16 human trafficking offences in relation to a 21-year-old woman.
The Human Trafficking Enforcement Team continued its investigation.
It is further alleged that:
– Mathew Maxwell was procuring females from inside a correctional facility
As a result of a second victim coming forward to the police, he was additionally charged with:
1. Trafficking In Persons by Recruiting
2. Procuring
3. Exercise Control
4. Material Benefit from Sexual Services
5. Financial/Material Benefit/Trafficking Person Over 18
6. Live on the avails of prostitution
7. Forcible Confinement
8. Assault
9. Two counts of Uttering Threats/Death or Bodily Harm
10. Assault with a Weapon or Imitation Weapon
11. Choking Overcome Resistance to Offence/Render Unconscious
12. Assault with a Weapon or Imitation Weapon
13. Extortion
14. Assault with a Weapon or Imitation Weapon CC 267 (a)
15. Fail to comply with Recognizance
16. Possession of proceeds obtained by crime
17. Counsel to commit an indictable offence
On November 3, 2016, he appeared at Toronto East Courts, 1911 Eglinton Ave. E., in courtroom 407.
The Toronto Police Service Sex Crimes – Human Trafficking Enforcement Team is concerned there may be other victims.
