The Arabic Collections Online (ACO) project — which received a $1.34 million grant last August — has passed the 10,000 mark in Arabic ebooks available free online:

aco: now more than 10,000 open-source arabic ebooks

According to ACO website, they currently provide digital access to 10,042 volumes across 6,265 subjects. The 10,000 mark was reached earlier this month, and currently featured titles include Tawfiq al-Hakim’s Return of the Spirit (عودة الروح) and Taha Hussein’s Colors (ألوان).

This project eventually aims to feature up to 23,000 volumes from the library collections at New York University, Princeton, Cornell, Columbia, the American University in Cairo, the American University of Beirut and the United Arab Emirates National Archives. According to their website, all out-of-copyright books from partner institutions are selected for ACO, further noting that they have researched “copyright requirements and restrictions for each of the countries of publication and believes the materials displayed on this site are all in the public domain.”

For notices about individual books as they’re digitized, you can follow the AOC’s Facebook page.
