Distinguished Indian Jurist to Visit Osgoode Hall Law School

The Honourable Justice Dalveer Bhandari – one of India’s most distinguished jurists – will visit York University’s Osgoode Hall Law School from September 22 to 26.  

Bhandari is a Judge of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague, President of the India International Law Foundation and a former Judge of the Supreme Court of India. He has also served as Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court and as a Judge of the High Court of Delhi.

“Osgoode Hall Law School is honoured that Justice Bhandari will be visiting us,” said Osgoode Dean Lorne Sossin.  “For the past several years, the Law School has been strengthening our relationship with India through opportunities such as clerkships for Osgoode students with the Supreme Court of India, partnerships with premier law schools in India, and the establishment of the Osgoode South Asian Advisory Council.  Justice Bhandari’s visit to the Law School will add considerably to our understanding of the work of India’s courts as well as the ICJ, and strengthen our relationship with our India partners.”

Monday, September 23, 12:30 to 2.30 p.m., Osgoode’s Moot Court  (1005 IKB).   Public lecture, entitled “Judging at the International Court of Justice,” presented by Osgoode’s Jack & Mae Nathanson Centre on Transnational Human Rights, Crime and Security. Reception to follow.

Tuesday, September 24, 2:30 to 2 p.m., University of Toronto’s Faculty Club, 4 Willcocks St.  Lunch seminar, entitled “Public Interest Litigation in India: Recent Developments,” presented by the Law Commission of Ontario and the Canadian Forum on Civil Justice, which are housed at Osgoode, and York’s Centre for Public Policy and Law.

Tuesday, September 24, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Blaney McMurtry LLP, 2 Queen Street East, Suite 1500.  Special guest speaker at reception co-hosted by Osgoode and the South Asian Bar Association (SABA) of Toronto, an organization dedicated to promoting the objectives of South Asian members of the legal profession.
