Make Hazel Eyes Stunning

The cool thing about hazel eyes? Each set gravitates toward different color profiles. Some eyes tend to be more green while others look more topaz. Some read olive while others appear amber.

The benefit of such color-change subtleties is that there are a lot — and we mean a lot — of shades of eyeshadow that work with hazel eyes. So, picking an eye makeup hue is as easy as deciding which color you want to highlight in your eyes. For example, purples and reddish coppers will pull out the green in hazel eyes, while pinks and purples will let yellow flecks in hazel eyes shine.

To help make sense of the seemingly infinite eyeshadow possibilities, we asked chatted with makeup artists Kristen Arnett and Janessa Paré. The two of them break down how to find the best makeup for your hazel eyes. Click on — your shadow soul mate awaits.

Violet is the “money color” for hazel eyes, Paré says. “Anything with a purple undertone will make the eyes look lighter.” This duo is perfect for beginners, as it has a light violet for daytime and a darker version of the hue for evening.

MAC Mineralize Eyeshadow Duo in Ever Amethyst, $22, available at Nordstrom.

“You don’t necessarily want to be swiping a bright violet all over your lid,” says Paré. “If you’re a little hesitant, try a liner instead.”

Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil in Asphyxia, $20, available at Urban Decay.

This colorful pot is a great alternative for those who prefer a gel liner.

Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner in Violet Ink, $26, available at Bobbi Brown.

While the darker purple shadows will brighten your eyes, the metallic shades will bring out the gold flecks in your irises.

Tom Ford Eye Quad in Honeymoon, $82, available at Tom Ford.

“Hazel can go blue, green, or even warm brown — but the reason the eye is hazel is because of the yellow swirls in the iris color that lightens it,” Paré explains. “That’s where you can get a wild-colored mascara, like a burgundy mascara, and have it really warm them up.”

Yves Saint Laurent Volume Effet Faux Clis Mascara in Burgundy, $32, available at Sephora.

Burgundy also works as a pretty gorgeous eyeliner.

NYX Cosmetics Slide On Pencil in Jewel, $8, available at NYX Cosmetics.

“When looking for gold shadows to bring out the orange and pink in hazel eyes, look for yellow or sunset-golds,” Arnett says. “This is an amazing gold that brings out flecks of yellow in hazel eyes.”

RMS Beauty, $28.00, available at RMS Beauty

“For girls with hazel eyes, any purple or reddish-copper is going to pull out that green. This shadow is great for evoking a tiger eye, since it plays up green and olive tones,” Arnett says.

Alima Pure, $12.50, available at Alima Pure

“Use this, which is great for playing up green and olive tones in the eye, as a liner or all over the lid for more drama,” Arnett says.

Youngblood, $21.00, available at Blush

“Neutral browns and greys can make hazel eyes fall flat,” says Arnett. “Instead, try something like this golden mocha shade, which contains a subtle rose undertone that nicely highlights green and olive flecks in hazel eyes,” Arnett says.

W3LL People, $16.00, available at

“This palette contains simple, all-in-one shades to complement hazel eyes,” Arnett says.

Logona, $22.80, available at Walgreens

“This shade is so nice on hazel or blue eyes; they will lighten and pick up a kaleidoscope of colors, like violet or a soft hint of green,” says Broussard.

Tarte, $11.00, available at Tarte

“This product has an opaque, foiled effect with a stunning sheen,” Broussard says. “I like to mix two colors, Patina and Glisten; The hints of gold will bring that light to hazel eyes and the mocha will add the brown tones to keep the look rich and provide added depth.”

Bare Escentuals BareMinerals High Shine Eyecolor in Patina, $12, available at BareEscentuals.

“The deep emerald hues will bring out more jewel tones to a hazel eye. I use this as an eyeshadow and a liner (spray a mist of water onto the shadow and apply with a small, angled brush),” Broussard says. “Another great eyeliner tip: Use the angle brush to place product into the waterline above and below the lashline with black mascara to finish for a dramatic look.”

Laura Mercier, $25.00, available at Neiman Marcus
