Deck-up your neck

Going big, bold and colourful seems to be the new style mantra.

Statement necklaces are back in vogue and almost everyone is sporting one. From the demure string of pearls to the funkier variety with coloured stones, glass or wooden beads and even touches of metal, nothing dresses up a plain outfit better. Opting for beads and stones is an inexpensive way to add style to anything you wear and with more designers experimenting with various elements you are literally spoilt for choice.

Accessory designer Malini Agarwalla agrees that costume jewellery has become very popular these days. “People are tired of sticking to precious jewels. Also, a lot of designers have taken to beads and stones as it is a fun, trendy option,” says the designer who adds that in her designs she works with different materials like pearls, coloured stones, semi-precious ones and teams them with leather ropes or thin scarf materials for a funky twist. She, however, warns that if one is wearing a printed outfit, they should go slow on the neckpiece. “Instead jazz up a plain coloured outfit with a vibrant long layered necklace,” she says.

The fake jewellery mentality has changed opines designer Shaheen Abbas who feels statement necklaces look really beautiful and are yet reasonable. “It’s the neck that’s currently in focus. Sporting just one bold neckpiece can really jazz up your style quotient,” she says. In her recent collection, Shaheen has worked with pearls, beads, textured silver, flower motifs, paisleys as well as glass crystals for an elegant yet young look. “Personally I feel that if you have something vibrant round the neck, you should stick to small solitaries in the ear and a demure ring or watch on the hand. Do not mix and match too much. You may just end up overdoing it,” Shaheen warns.

Long necklaces are extremely versatile and can be teamed with both ethnic and contemporary outfits says jewellery designer Varuna Jani. “Long coloured stone necklaces highlight an element of fun and make an attractive accent for a casual attire. Wearing matching accessories is rather boring. Sporting contrasting jewellery is a hot trend. You can team a cocktail dress with a gold finished neckpiece or wear lots of beads with a skirt and top for the bohemian look. From tourmalines to sapphires, pearls and aquamarine, there are plenty of bright stone necklaces to choose from,” Varuna says.
