The Hot 5: Summer’s Huge Beauty Trends

Hot damn! The temperature’s rising, the sun’s shining, and it’s officially time to embrace the steam. While it may be temping to pull out your same tired bronzer and coral lip gloss, those go-to summer beauty items can get boring pretty fast. This year, we’d like to challenge you to think outside the…makeup bag, if you will, and try out the five fresh trends that we’re dying to wear this season.

From dark cherry pouts to slicked-back surfer hair, these looks are unexpected but totally wearable, and will perfectly complement your sick summer threads. Try your favorite, try them all — after all, what better time than summer to heat up your look?

City Surf

Oh hey, slick! Why fight the frizz when you can simply rock your wet hair and go? Thankfully, despite this look being totally easy and attainable for any hair type, it has a very runway vibe (unlike your messy bun from last season).

To get the look, work this argan-oil infused surf paste into damp hair and slick back into a textured ponytail or tight chignon. Muss with your fingers, and vow to never wrestle with your blowdryer in 100-degree heat again.

Organix Moroccan Surf Paste, $7.89, available at

Girly Grunge

Sure, certain makeup shades scream summer, like a warm nude lip or turquoise eyeliner. But there’s something about soft, flowy clothing that makes us crave a slightly edgier (but still feminine!) look to balance it all out. A barely-there smudge of black eyeliner, paired with sooty silver shadow and a petal-pink lip would look bad-ass with a rumpled eyelet dress.

We’re obsessing over this new, spangly silver shadow from Urban Decay. Smudge on a hint on your lower lid with your pinky for the barest hint of a smoky eye (that’ll only look better as it gets smudgier).

Urban Decay Moondust Eyeshadow in Moonspoon, $20, available at Sephora.

Pure Matte-Ness

Lip gloss is nice, but when we’re already feeling sticky on the subway platform, the last thing we want is anything tacky on our lips. Enter the gorgeous, velvety matte lip. In a summery bright, it still looks seasonal, but the finish makes it fresh. (See how this model looks incredible with air-dried hair and almost nothing else on her face? The power of the perfect lipstick, friends.)

This Mod-era pink will be the perfect pop against a hint of a tan.

Kevyn Aucoin The Matte Lip Color in Tenacious, $32, available

Sexy Smolder

Looking for a new summer date-night look? Here it is. We’re digging the pairing of the sooty eye and deep, dark lip with a sporty-chic halter dress — just the right mix of sleek and hot.

It just doesn’t get more luxe than a satiny black-cherry lip — are you bold enough to take it for a spin?

By Terry Rouge Terrybly Lipstick in Carnal Attraction, $49, available at Space NK.

The New Bronze

Bronzer: sweep all over with a fluffy brush. (Rinse, repeat.) Or is it that predictable? It’s time to re-think the summer staple. See how lovely this peachy, subtle bronzer looks on her cheekbones only? Same warm look, but way more modern.

Our favorite new bronzer, this super-fine-milled powder has the perfect subtle color — plus, it smooths skin for a perfect, poreless finish.

Too Faced Bronzed and Poreless Pore Perfecting Bronzer, $30, available at Sephora.
