We’ve never been the patient type. Waiting the three-to-five business days for our online purchase to arrive? Unbearable. Standing by until that item we want finally goes on sale? Tortuous. How many sleeps again until Fashion Week?

It should be no wonder then that those six months after we first see trends on the runway and before they actually appear in stores feels like an eternity. And when the weather actually matches the season the trend is for? You’re most likely over it.

To help you stay on your schedule, we’ve interpreted the fall trends for the summer months. You hear that, ladies? That’s pre-season dressing right here. Scroll through for eight trends you can start wearing immediately.

1

Lightweight Plaid — We first saw ethereal, lighter-than-air plaids during Dries Van Noten’s spring ’13 show, and contemporary brands like Phillip Lim and Stella McCartney really ran with it for fall. To make it work now, make sure you’re wearing your sheer plaid layers with other pieces that walk that masculine/feminine border, like Teva-inspired strappy sandals, crisp tennis skirts, and supple messenger bags.

Army Pants — The trick to making fall’s army pants look modern and not crunchy is all in the shoe. A bold ladylike stiletto is enough to dress up an army pant for summer (switch to a stiletto boot once the temperatures drop).

3

Folk Embroidery — We have a feeling that embroidery and tartan is going to be the new floral and stripe. Just look at Suno’s fall ’13 collection for inspiration. To summarize the look, rely on some neon to pep everything up.

4

Red Velvet — It may seem blasphemous to wear red velvet outside of the holiday party circuit, but the key to making it work for summer is to mix your textures. Luxurious (faux) croc, silks, metals, and fringe feel rich, but won’t give you heatstroke.

Menswear Fabrics — True herringbones and tweeds are way too thick to wear during the summer, but cotton pinstripes are light enough to wear to work when it’s sweltering out and play on this fall’s vibe perfectly. Mix your colors for a quirky look that’s also professional.

Boxy Jackets — This look actually incorporates a few fall trends — quilted miniskirts, patent boots, and boxy jackets — all in one. Just wear a sleeveless blouse and forgo the stockings to summerize the outfit.

Embellished Coats — A coat during the summer? Laughable, we know. There’s no reason to cover up that extremely. Just find a longer-length vest with some minimal embellishments, and mimic the sparkle in your shoes and accessories.

Undone Rocker — This fall’s rock-star vibe is a little more hippie than what we’re used to. If you’re as daring as the Rodarte girls, wear a high-cut one-piece swimsuit underneath breezy tie-dyed Bermuda shorts or a skirt, but any combination of black spandex, organic prints, and oversized leather pieces will do the trick.
