Fashion redefines time

The mechanism that has been keeping us in sync with time since ages has today donned a new ‘avatar’. Watches have become a chic fashion accessory in today’s consumerist era.

Watches have always worn a very formal and serious look with sober designs. Most of the watches earlier had a basic black strap and simple numeric dials. But the designing of these watches has witnessed a revolution. Stylish and trendy watches are making their presence felt, thus making watches a style statement.

“The purpose of a watch is now no longer limited to just telling time. Watches also add to the look of a person and serve as the best accessory, especially for guys,” says Robin, an engineering student.

A similar view is endorsed by Ridhima, an MBA student. “While mobile phones now do the job of telling time, but they can never double as a watch. The style that a watch carries is altogether different. And the best part is that they can be teamed up with every look.”

Different types of watches have flooded the market. So depending upon the occasion, age, choice and attire, a person can flaunt different watches. From unusual designs to fancy straps to crystal studs to different colours, the variation in designs are profuse. Brands have come up with different collection to cater to the needs of all its customers.

To cater to the more fashion conscious youngsters, bright colours, chunky straps and dials with unusual designs are more popular. “Our brand has different products depending upon the buyers. For the youngsters, we have Fastrack, Xylys, Aviator Series and Sonata Yuva Collection. Their designing is more sporty,” says Reena Malhotra, owner, Titan showroom.

A watch can also double as a piece of jewellery. For this purpose, watches are specially crafted to give the look of a jewel. Their straps are designed like a bracelet, made of yellow or silver metal, decorated with crystals or semi precious stones. Such watches add to the grace of formal apparels. “Our brands — Raga, Raga Crystals and Raga Diva — are specially made for women. Brand Nebula has watches made of 18 karat gold. These watches have the look of a jewellery,” adds Reena.

Not only designs, even the technology used has changed drastically. Digital watches have a huge share in the market and are normally associated with sporty watches. Similarly, now a watch solves many more purposes. It can act as a stopwatch, a music player; it can tell the temperature and even the incoming calls on your mobile.

While the watches offer many added incentives, there are still some who feel that simple is beautiful. “There are many trendy watches available in the markets that have different features, but I still prefer my old, basic wrist watch. It forms a part of my style,” says Maninder Singh, a businessman.
