Gary Rossington of Lynyrd Skynyrd passed away at 71

Gary Rossington, the band’s original guitarist, died at the age of 71. The band made the announcement on social media, but did not disclose the cause of death.

Rossington had started the band in 1964, along with Ronnie Van Zant, Allen Collins, Larry Junstrom, and Bob Burns. After various name changes, the band settled on Lynyrd Skynyrd in 1970. Rossington was one of the survivors of the tragic plane crash in 1977 that claimed the lives of several band members. He suffered multiple injuries, but survived.

In later years, Rossington faced health problems, including heart issues that required multiple surgeries. Despite the tragedies, Rossington maintained a positive outlook and did not view the band’s story as tragic.
